According to Buddhist legend, when the Buddha came forth from his mother’s womb,
two jets of water appeared to pour from the sky, one cool and one warm, for bathing
the
baby Buddha and his mother. Hence, the highlight of the Buddha’s birthday celebration
is
the ritual of “Bathing the Buddha”
The act of pouring fragrant water over the shoulders of the Buddha serves as a reminder
to cleanse the mind from the three poisons of greed, hatred and ignorance.
The
ceremony symbolizes the washing away of greed, hatred and ignorance
and purification
of one’s heart and mind.
